Practical Sets
Set 1: (Forward Strangles)
Forward Strangles 1
Pull attacker’s arm down at the elbow: quickly place one hand towards the back of the head, place other hand on the chin and turn head up and around, step through and take to the ground. Find an escape route and run
Forward Strangles 2
Slap both arms down: quickly place one hand on the back of head and perform an elbow strike, knee to groin, step back grabbing the opponent and pull body to the floor. Find an escape route and run
Forward Strangles 3
Push one arm up and one down: step to the side, under the raised arm, trap attacker’s arms across one another and strike to the head, grab collar and drag down to the floor. Find an escape route and run
Forward Strangles 4 (optional)
Push one arm up and one down: step to the side, under the raised arm, trap attacker’s arms across each other and strike to the head, grab inside and perform reverse propeller. Find an escape route and run
Set 2: (Rear Strangles)
Rear Strangles 1 (SUCD - Shoulder up, chin down)
SUCD, attempt to trap one of the attacker’s hands, half turn and reverse elbow strike to solar plexus: using the same arm, open palm strike to the groin, scoop inside attacker’s trapped arm pulling them towards you, place your leg between opponents’ legs and perform a hip throw. Find an escape route and run
Rear Strangles 2
SUCD, attempt to trap one hand, half turn and with your free arm, elbow to solar plexus, turn into attacker strike to face with an open palm and push chin, step through to a rear single leg sweep to a take down. Find an escape route and run
Rear Strangles 3
SUCD, attempt to trap attackers’ hand, half turn and elbow strike to chest, lower your body and step behind into horse riding stance, (keeping hands in front), push your elbow or a straight arm into attacker’s stomach, sink and twist your outside leg giving space for your attacker to fall, kick closest available target. Find an escape route and run
Rear Strangles 4 (optional)
SUCD, attempt to trap one of the hands, half turn and with your free arm, reverse elbow strike to solar plexus: using the same arm, open handed palm strike to the groin, scoop outside attacker’s trapped arm, while pulling the arm towards you, place one foot outside your attackers legs and pull into a hip throw or trip. Find an escape route and run
Set 3: (Forward Defence)
Forward Defence 1
Double block and grab opponents’ arm, backhand strike to side of face, lift arm step through with elbow strike to ribs and then reverse elbow to back, palm to chin and elbow to chest dropping attacker to the floor into arm bar or break to finish. Find an escape route and run.
Forward Defence 2
Double block and grab same arm, knife hand strike to neck, knee strike to lower stomach, (do not drop leg) step down behind attacker’s leg causing them to slightly loose balance, palm strike to chin, elbow strike to chest, drop to floor, arm bar or break to finish. Find an escape route and run.
Forward Defence 3
Double block and grab same arm, lift leg and drop back into back stance pulling attacker into an elbow strike to the face, wrap arm around neck and step into pendulum leg sweep realising the head allowing attacker to fall to ground, drop into arm bar or break and finish. Find an escape route and run.
Forward Defence 4 (optional)
Double block to arm, Block arm and strike the neck at the same time, hook the arm and neck, turn and propeller takedown. Find an escape route and run.
Set 4: (Bear Hugs)
Bear Hugs 1 (bear hug from behind)
Trap attacker’s hands, stamp on foot, keep one hand trapped and strike groin, raise the same hand under attacker’s arm and secure, turn and take down with standing hip throw or drop to one knee into an arm bar or break. Find an escape route and run.
Bear Hugs 2 (bear hug from behind)
Trap attacker’s hands, step slightly to one side and elbow to chest, same hand goes up to chin, turn and grab attackers head with the other hand and push up and rotate towards the floor into a take down and finish. Find an escape route and run.
Bear Hugs 3 (bear hug from front)
Kick shin, move backwards while pushing fists into lower stomach, strike groin, apply shoulder lock, turn and take down, turn and place knee on back of attacker’s neck while applying pressure on the shoulder. Find an escape route and run.
Bear Hugs 4 (bear hug from behind – optional)
Trap attacker’s hands, step slightly to one side and strike groin while still trapping one hand, press shoulder into attackers’ elbow to apply an arm lock and turn to the outside, hold attacker’s elbow, pull back and step forward to take down. Find an escape route and run.
Set 5: (Ground Escapes)
Ground Escapes 1
Outside Full mount, pull opponent towards you, make a strong bridging motion by lifting your hips as high as possible and leaning over to one side while trapping your opponent’s leg, roll your opponent off the top, reversing the position.
Ground Escapes 2
Inside Full mount, push opponent creating space, shrimp and place your knee inside the opponent’s guard, push their leg with your other foot, making the opponent slide down, roll and reverse the position.
Ground Escapes 3
Side half leg mount, cover and shrimp towards the raised leg, pull towards you and at the same roll and reverse the position.
Ground Escapes 4 (optional)
Side leg mount over body, cover and shrimp towards the raised leg, push the leg away and at the same time roll and reverse the position.
Set 6: (Stick Attacks)
Stick Attack 1
Downward to the head - Parry to the outside with left arm, catch the attacker’s arm with right elbow. Place right fist on radial of the attacker’s arm, use left hand to pull right fist to chest while moving right shoulder to attacker’s shoulder and step behind attacker. Find an escape route and run.
Stick Attack 2
Swing knife hand block to the inside of attacker’s forearm, step in and loop arm around the arm, place other arm to the attacker’s shoulder and apply a figure four lock, turn and sink to take down
Stick Attack 3
Swing (Inside to out) knife hand block to the inside of attacker’s forearm, use the circle block to move under the arm and step to the side, use forearm to break attacker’s arm, turn and apply figure four lock, turn and sink to take down
Set 7: (Knife Attacks)
Knife Attacks 1
Ice pick stab - Parry to the outside with left arm, catch the attacker’s arm with right elbow. Place right fist on radial of the attacker’s arm, use left hand to pull right fist to chest while moving right shoulder to attacker’s shoulder and step behind attacker. Find an escape route and run.
Knife Attacks 2
Gut stab - Block attacker’s lower arm with left forearm and attacker’s upper arm with right forearm at the same time, while moving stomach away from knife, use lower arm to keep blade away as you circle and trap the attacking hand, while using higher arm to rotate attacker’s triceps (keep elbows tight to your body). Kick attacker’s shin or knee to thigh (optional). Use higher hand in attacker’s elbow to turn and apply arm lock behind attacker’s back, apply wrist lock and take knife. Place lower arm on attacker’s right triceps and use higher arm to pull collar to create human shield. Find an escape route and run.
Knife Attacks 3
Slash (outside/inside) – Shuffle back to avoid knife slash, double block on the back slash, hold the attacker’s wrist and use the other forearm to apply arm lock to elbow - we can turn back for figure four lock and takedown or push forward and trip to takedown
Set 8: (Knife Threats)

Held to stomach – (needs more information)

Held to neck (left/right/behind)
Knife Threats 3
Held to kidney from behind – Look to check which arm attacker is using, turn on the inside and loop arm around attacker’s arm while striking attacker’s neck with other forearm, knee strike to the groin/thigh, turn and take down, turn and place knee on back of attacker’s neck while applying pressure on the shoulder
Set 9: (Kick Defences)

Round kick (outside/inside): (Step inside sweeping arm block and grab, stepping inside leg sweep) (step back and push kick around, counter from the back)
Kick Defences 3
Side kick – Step to the outside, deflect kick, counter from the back
Set 10: (Training Set of Locks)
1) Wrist lock, Dislocation, break
2) Arm Bar, Dislocation, break
3) Elbow Head Strike, Arm Lock, Dislocation, break
4) Arm Lock, Dislocation, break
5) Push Arm Lock Finger Dislocation, Wrist break
